If you just placed new fabric couches and chairs in your living room, you will want to take special care in keeping them clean so they do not appear grungy-looking. In addition, accidents such as spills or stains can occur, putting your furniture's material at risk. Cleaning upholstery should be done every few weeks in order to keep your furniture looking its best. Here are some tips you can use to do your own routine cleaning on your furniture in an attempt to keep it looking like new.

Start With Vacuuming

To start your cleaning session, vacuum your couch and chairs using a hose attachment. This will remove any pet fur, loose dirt, and other particles from the upholstery. This is an important step that needs to be done before you use any type of cleaning solution. If you fail to vacuum first, you may be spreading dirt into the fibers of the material when you clean.

Check The Tags

If you have cleaning instructions that came with your furniture, or if it is listed on a tag somewhere on the furniture itself, read it to find out what type of cleaning is recommended. If you do not have this information, call the furniture store or look it up online to see if there is a manual available to aid you in cleaning tips for your specific pieces.

Take Care Of Stains

To remove stains in your upholstery, make sure to blot instead of rub. Rubbing a stained area will only spread it into the fibers, making it harder to remove. Blot from the exterior edges of the stain inward to prevent it from further spreading. Use a mixture a tablespoon of vinegar in a cup of water and place it in a spray bottle. Use this to spray the area that is stained before using a clean cloth to blot.

Steam Clean The Furniture

Using a steam cleaner will help freshen up the brightness of the material of your furniture as well as remove grime from the material. This does not need to be done every week. Every few months will be enough to clean the material and it will keep it from being over-washed, which could make the material wear out quicker. Rent a steam cleaner from a grocery store or home goods store to use on your furniture if you do not own your own steam cleaner. If you need assistance, contact upholstery cleaning services near you.
