If your home or belongings have suffered water damage, it is important to act as quickly as possible. The quicker you act, the less damage your furniture will sustain.

Remove Potential Mold Spores

If you can see mold has started to grow on your couch, or if mold is growing nearby and you fear it has infected your couch, you need to remove all potential mold spores. It is best to do this step outside so that you do not spread the mold spores throughout your house.

Take your couch outside. The first thing you should do is use a broom to brush off any visible debris and mold. Go over the entire couch. If you think mold is on the bottom of the couch, lay down a tarp and flip the couch on its side so you can sweep potential spores off the bottom as well.

After you have swept the couch, you should go back over it with a vacuum cleaner. This is the best way to ensure that all spores are removed from the couch. Once again, remember to vacuum the bottom of the couch as well. Be sure you also take off the cushions and thoroughly vacuum all sides.

You should allow the couch to dry before moving on to the next step.

Cleaning The Couch

Now that you have done your best to remove all mold spores, you need to clean your couch. Here are a few popular cleaning methods you could try:

  • Soap: Using regular detergent or dish soap, you can create a soapy mixture and use it to wash the couch. It is best to apply the soap with a sponge, and then wipe the soapy mixture off with a clean towel that is slightly damp.
  • Alcohol Solution: Another way to kill any remaining mold is to use a one part rubbing alcohol to three parts water. Once again, use a sponge to apply the solution and a clean cloth to wipe it away.
  • Bleach: A bleach solution should be your last resort, as the bleach could cause the color to fade on your couch. However, if you still feel like you can see mold or smell mildew, this is the best way to go. Mix 1/2 teaspoon with two cups of water to create a very diluted bleach solution. Sponge it on, and then wipe it off.

After you use any of the methods listed above, you should let the couch dry in the sun for at least 24 hours. If you can still see mold or smell mildew after you have tried the steps above, you should contact local water damage expert to help you out.
