As a homeowner, you have a beautiful granite sink but along with that beauty comes the need to understand how to clean it properly. The sink receives a lot of use and the granite has been treated with special elements that will need specific cleaning products, so the surface doesn't become damaged. Even though the rock is chip, scratch, and heat resistant, you need to be careful what products are used to maintain its glamour.

General Cleaning

After each use, the sink should be completely rinsed to remove any debris or food from its surface. It may also be a good idea to do a quick wipe with a dry rag to prevent any minerals in the water from damaging its surface.

For general cleaning, use a small amount of dish-washing liquid mixed with water in a bucket to make a sudsy cleaning product. The mixture will remove any streaks and dirt easily. It is best to use a soft microfiber towel or sponge to prevent any unnecessary scratches. Never use scouring pads on the sink because the wool or wire in them will cause permanent damage. Once again, rinse the sink completely.

Tough Stains

A special cleaning product is available in many home improvement stores that is supposed to be combined with hydrogen peroxide to clean extra stubborn stains. The mixture will form a paste that can absorb the stain and easily lift it from the granite. It is advisable to follow the directions on the package for how much to apply to the area.

Cover the treated surface with some plastic wrap and secure it using tape so the product can effectively grip the stain and remove it. The process may take several days but can vary for each product. Be sure to follow the specified instructions. Use a soft towel or sponge to remove the dried paste. Rinse the area completely. It may require more than one application.

Special Tips

When unsure whether a specific remedy will work on granite surfaces, it is best to receive additional instructions from the manufacturer of the sink. You can get some pointers from the Internet to begin the process.

Never use solutions that have formic acid, bleach, or chlorinated solvents on granite. These products might discolor or remove the sealant on the sink's surface.

By taking the extra time and using the correct cleaning products, the surface of your granite sink should remain beautiful for many years to come. After all, the few minutes and extra effort will save a lot of money in the future.

If you don't want to worry about cleaning it yourself, you could always contact a professional cleaning company like Kathy's Quality Cleaning, Inc. to do it for you.
