Cleaning your garage windows is pretty different than cleaning the windows inside your home. Especially if it has been a while since you've cleaned them, they're probably caked with dead bugs and perhaps even a greasy, grimy residue from being exposed to car exhaust. To get your garage windows as clean as possible without breaking them, follow these tips:

Start with a de-greasing cleaner.

You should focus on removing dirt and bug parts first, so any subsequent cleaner you use can better reach the finer dust and debris on the windows. A simple mixture of dish soap and water will do for this purpose. Add a big squirt of concentrated dish soap to a warm pan of water, and sponge it onto the windows. Let it sit for a minute to loosen the more caked-on debris, and then scrub away with the same sponge.

Rinse the dish soap away by simply spraying the windows down with a hose. Make sure you use only gentle pressure so you don't crack the windows.

Use a heavy-duty window cleaner, not a homemade potion.

Using green, homemade, non-toxic cleaners inside the home is a good idea since you spend all of your time in there. For your garage, however, you'll want to use the most effective cleaner available. That's usually a heavy-duty window cleaner, not a homemade vinegar or castile soap mixture. You don't really have to worry since you'll rarely come into contact with your garage windows. If you're worried about touching the cleaner, just wear gloves and long sleeves.

Use the window cleaner after you have used the de-greasing cleaner and allowed the windows to dry. Applying it to wet windows is not advised, since this will dilute it. Use the cleaner according to the instructions on the package.

Scrub tough spots with a toothbrush.

When you come across a sticky spot or a bug that won't wipe away, attack it with an old toothbrush. Dip it in some baking soda if you need a little extra friction. Scrubbing in small, circular motions is the best way to loosen the caked-on grime. You can also holding a wet sponge against the area for a little while. This might moisten the grime and make it easier to wipe away.
